The UCC Global Connect Lecture Series a new intiative under UCC Centre for Outreach and Global Engagement was inaugurated at Union Christian College, Aluva, with an insightful lecture by Dr. Thamban Meloth, Director, National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa. Delivering the first lecture in the series on the theme “Exploring the Frozen Poles: Opportunities and Frontiers”, Dr. Meloth addressed students from various science streams, emphasizing the vital link between the Polar regions and the tropical climate.
He explained how climate warming in the Polar realm leads to sea ice decline, glacier and permafrost melting, and sea level rise, with cascading repercussions across the globe. Highlighting the scope of Polar research, he pointed to opportunities not only in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry but also in Psychology. Encouraging young minds to raise questions and pursue research in emerging areas, he lauded the college’s initiatives for fostering national and international collaborations.
The program was presided over by Dr. Rekha Nair, Academic Dean of the college.
